چکیده

The Norwegian Polar Institute initiated a research programme on white whales in 1995 to gather biological information relevant for the species’ management; results of which are reviewed herein. Satellite tracking from two periods (1995–2001 and 2013–16), between sea ice diminished markedly, showed that waters off archipelago Svalbard spent most their time foraging close tidewater glaciers. Transits glaciers typically followed coastline, with moving rapidly one glacier another. During later period, some out fjords, suggesting they might be targeting prey Atlantic Water masses now prevail Svalbard’s west-coast fjords. Most dives were extremely shallow (13 ± 26 m; maximum 350 m) short duration (97 123 s; 31.4 min). Fatty-acid analyses indicated polar cod (Boreogadus saida) was main during first sampling period. An aerial survey 2018 estimated population numbered 549 (CI: 436–723) animals. genetically separate populations west Greenland White Sea. Predation by killer appears have influenced whale behaviour Svalbard; often silent, despite having normal vocal repertoire species coastal movements take place very water. This has high contaminant levels. Climate change poses threat this small whales.

Concentrations and patterns of organochlorine contaminants in white whales (Delphinapterus leucas) from Svalbard, Norway.

Blubber was collected from live-captured, adult male white whales (Delphinapterus leucas) from Svalbard, Norway, and analysed for levels and patterns of organochlorine (OC) contaminants. The OC compounds analysed were HCB, dieldrin, sigmaHCH (alpha-HCH, beta-HCH and gamma-HCH), sigmaChl (heptachlor epoxide, oxychlordane, cis-chlordane, trans-nonachlor, and cis-nonachlor), sigmaDDT (pp'-DDT, pp'...

Levels of toxaphene congeners in white whales (Delphinapterus leucas) from Svalbard, Norway.

This study reports concentrations of three pesticide toxaphene congeners (CHBs; CHB-26, -50 and -62) from the blubber of ten adult, male white whales (Delphinapterus leucas) from Svalbard, Norway. The CHB congeners that occurred at the highest levels in the blubber of the white whales were, as expected, CHB-26 (4636+/-1992 (SD) ng/g l.w.) and CHB-50 (6579+/-2214 ng/g l.w.); CHB-62 (232+/-231 ng...

Hematology and Plasma Chemistry as Indicators of Health and Ecological Status in Beluga Whales, Delphinapterus leucas

The capture of beluga whales, Delphinapterus leucas, for instrumentation or tagging afforded the opportunity to collect blood, which was analyzed to evaluate the animals’ health and gain information on basic physiological systems. Here, we report on hematological and plasma chemical constituents in samples obtained from 183 belugas, 55 of which were handled during attempts to apply tracking ins...

efl students gender and socioeconomic status: the use of politeness strategies in the first and second languages

within the components of communicative competence, a special emphasis is put on the “rules of politeness,” specifically the politeness strategies (brown and levinson, 1978) that speakers deploy when performing the request speech act. this is because the degree of imposition that making a request places upon one’s interlocutor(s) has been seen to be influenced by several factors among which, as ...
